Kayaking in Butts Wood with our Making Space for Nature team

Our Making Space for Nature team recently partnered with Moo Canoes to host a one-off kayaking event on the canal at Butts Wood to celebrate London Rivers Week!

Participants got to learn new skills and journey along the canal so that they could view Thamesmead from a new perspective while in the water. The one-hour sessions were designed to suit novices, and people of all ages were invited to join us on the day.

The Kayaking sessions included a safety talk and an introduction to the paddling technique, as well as a journey out on to the canal network, towards the Birchmere Lake/Harrow canal junction and back again.  At the turning point instructors encouraged participants to become more confident on the water – setting challenges and playing games as they paddled along.

A total of 80 people joined us on the day, with some giving some helpful feedback on our proposed plans for canal improvements in and around Butts Wood.

You can see some photo highlights from the day below.
