Retired residents enjoy afternoon tea at Moorings Sociable Club

Older residents across Thamesmead headed to the Moorings Sociable Club (MSC) on Thursday 27 February for a special afternoon tea organised by Peabody.

The event – designed to combat loneliness and isolation – was inspired by feedback from residents attending our warm hubs at the community venue every Thursday.

The first afternoon tea event of its kind at the club, the room buzzed with conversation and laughter. Refreshments were provided by the on-site Camouflage Café, which works with adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

As part of the event, residents learned more about what’s on offer locally, and shared ideas on other activities they’d like to see and the best ways for Peabody to promote them. Local councillor Olu Babatola joined the residents for the discussion.

Suggestions included:

  • More activities for grandparents and grandchildren
  • Seasonal community gatherings to bring neighbours together
  • More opportunities for seniors to connect and socialise

Bringing people together for meaningful, sociable activities is a key part of Peabody’s work to support people’s health and wellbeing. Peabody will now use this feedback to inform future events for older people.

Thanks to the cake and the chance to be heard, all guests left feeling satisfied. Local resident Bobbi commented: "The food was excellent, cakes were excellent, and the service was excellent! Grateful for the invite—just wish the teapot and cups were bigger!"
