Southmere Lake

Peabody has invested £2.5 million into Southmere Lake to improve water quality and create more habitat for wildlife.

A local hotspot, the lake is a beautiful wetlands area. Take a leisurely walk, head to the nature trail and enjoy the different plants and wildlife as you go.

What’s at Southmere Lake:

  • a wetlands area on the east side of the lake to attract new birds and wildlife

  • four viewing platforms over the water

  • a fish-free channel that encourages different species, including frogs and newts, to live there

  • floating islands near the new library, reed beds and a silt curtain (a barrier under water that collects silt and prevents algae build up)

  • a restored island near the towers on Southmere Lake, including a bat monitoring system to record which species of bats are in the area

On the shores of Southmere Lake is the Lakeside Centre and the new boat house.
