Youth organisation scoops top award

A Thamesmead not-for-profit organisation has won a prestigious BEFFTA award in recognition of its work in the community.

Youth Unity was named Best Youth Organisation at the Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion, Television, Arts and Sports Awards.

Managing director Shirley Jackson said: “It is an honour to be recognised among such inspiring global leaders.

“We look forward to continuing our mission of making a positive impact on the lives of young people in Thamesmead.”

The organisation, which operates from The Nest in Cygnet Square, tackles issues including group violence, drug abuse and exploitation.

This important work is being supported by £10,000 in funding from developers Lovell, who are building the second phase of homes in South Thamesmead. As part of their contract with Peabody, Lovell are funding and leading a range of initiatives to help improve lives for local people.

Youth Unity is using the funding to deliver outreach work and one-to-one mentoring to young people in South Thamesmead to prevent escalations of antisocial behaviour and gang-related activity.
