Creative kids’ road signs warn drivers

Road safety signs designed by local children have been unveiled around their South Thamesmead school.

Pupils at Northwood Primary School took part in a competition to draw posters to encourage motorists to slow down and drive safely on the roads near the school.

The top three designs were turned into signs by Peabody graphic designers. Six signs are now displayed in prominent positions around the school as a warning to passing traffic.

Matthew, who is in Year 4, designed one of the signs. He said: “I was quite surprised to see my drawing displayed in public. It made me feel happy.”

Year 5 pupil Ilaria, one of the school’s junior travel ambassadors, said: “We hope people will realise there’s a school here. I think they will drive better, more slowly and carefully when they know.”

The signs were funded by the London Borough of Bexley as part of the School Superzones initiative. Local schools can set priorities for funding. Northwood Primary asked for support to create safe spaces for children walking or cycling to school.
