Local residents in Thamesmead have a fresh opportunity to improve their cooking skills while saving money, thanks to a brand-new five-week healthy cookery course launching at the café in Lakeview Court – an extra-care housing scheme in the north of the town.
While open to the wider community, the sessions are currently aimed at Lakeview Court’s residents and others who use the services there. There is no need to book, meaning attendees can simply turn up on the day to join in.
The course, the first of its kind at the venue, is being run by Lakeview Court’s café manager, Chiamaka Muoneke, after she successfully applied to the Thamesmead Community Fund. The fund – which is run by Peabody, the London Community Foundation, and an advisory group of local people – awards grants of up to £3,000 to individuals and organisations who want to deliver cultural or community projects that benefit Thamesmead’s residents.
Speaking about the course, Chiamaka, said: "Food can be a fantastic way of bringing people together and showing people you care. Our sessions aim to do just that, while promoting healthier lifestyles on a budget. I’m really looking forward to welcoming participants.”
The course, open to adults aged 18 and over, runs every Tuesday from 4 March to 1 April 2025, between 11.00am and 1.30pm.
For those wanting to explore more dining options, the Lakeview Court café is open:
- Lunch: 12pm – 2.30pm (Monday to Saturday)
- Dinner: 5pm – 7pm (Tuesday & Thursday)
