African cinema coming to town

The Thamesmead African Film Club has received a £3,000 grant to start monthly screenings starting this summer.

Organiser Sonia Foday said: “I’ll be running monthly screenings in Thamesmead, curating, programming and leading all the creative aspects of this project. It’s a dream come true for me.

“It’s an opportunity to celebrate African stories and make cinema accessible to everyone, reflecting the richness and diversity of the community itself.

“The highest percentage of people describing themselves as Black African in both London and the UK live in Thamesmead, which doesn’t currently have a permanent cinema. That makes this project even more meaningful.”

Sonia’s experience includes being a producer of the Royal African Society’s movie showcase Film Africa 2024 and a programmer at Paris-based African film organisation Cinewax. She was also a jury member at Accra Indie Film Fest in Ghana.

She added: “I’d like to give a huge thank you to the Thamesmead Community Fund and Peabody. They’ve supported this vision and given me the opportunity to give something special to my community by bringing African cinema to Thamesmead.”
