Thamesmead Codex

The Thamesmead Codex is a 24-metre long hand painted conversation with residents of Thamesmead, created by renowned artist Bob and Roberta Smith.

A collaboration between Peabody and Tate Modern, it's currently on display at Tate Modern until May 2024.

Over a two-year period Bob and Roberta Smith interviewed 17 participants ranging from some of the first occupiers of the Thamesmead estate, to shop keepers, musicians, religious leaders, healthcare leaders, local entrepreneurs and artists. The series of 24 paintings captures local residents’ experiences of life in the town.

The exhibition was launched in the Thamesmead town centre and was on display from June to September 2021. It then moved to Tate Modern.
