PURPOSE OF POST

 

As an Associate/Technical Director you will be involved in real projects from day one, with exposure to some of the most prestigious projects in the UK. We encourage and develop our people, providing them with a varied workload and the autonomy to work individually, as well as giving them the opportunity to make a valued contribution to the team.

Reporting to a Divisional/Regional Director, you will support them in delivering projects effectively to strict deadlines, whilst maintaining technical performance standards.

 

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

There are various duties and responsibilities central to the role and these will assist you in reaching your full potential:

  • To assist and deputise for the Technical and/or Regional Director in leading, managing and taking responsibility for the technical and commercial performance of one of the company’s profit centres and its commissions;
  • To keep abreast of industry best practice and new developments in own area of technical expertise;
  • To develop and maintain an effective network of contacts and participate in industry events (seminars, conferences, etc);
  • To manage all technical and commercial aspects of commissions;
  • To set and maintain technical standards;
  • To review and approve work prepared by others;
  • To comply with all safety and IMS procedures and ensure that staff do likewise.

 

To perform your role as an Associate/Technical Director, you will also be expected to demonstrate a number of competencies, as detailed below;

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

  • Degree qualified Chartered Engineer / Chartered Transport Planner in a relevant discipline, or an Engineer with lower qualifications but a minimum 20 years relevant experience;
  • Shall have a proven commercial awareness and judgement;
  • Have the drive and self-motivation to continuously develop your skills;
  • Be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and to be able to build and develop relationships, both internally and externally;
  • Be able to demonstrate developing and maintaining an effective network of contacts;
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge in analysing problems and creating solutions;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff by example;
  • Be reliable and have a responsible attitude to work.

 

COMPETENCIES

 

In order to meet the requirements of your role, and for your continuing professional development, there are a number of competencies that you need to have, improve and develop, as detailed below;

 

Business & Financial Management

  • Develop leadership and support relevant Directors in strategic direction of the business
  • Assume full financial responsibility for all projects you are Director for
  • Developing an increasing understanding of Company financial and risk management controls
  • As agreed with the Technical / Regional Director, plans and takes personal responsibility to monitor and control a segment of the office budget
  • Maintain cashflow and manage WIP through timely invoicing
  • Reviews and approves fee proposals including requests for additional fees when appropriate
  • Provides reports to the Technical / Regional Director as required
  • Assesses client suitability and credit worthiness in conjunction with the Technical / Regional Director
  • Prices work within the parameters agreed by the Directors, and has a good understanding of market value of services
  • Ensure invoices are submitted promptly and forward orders are managed relative to the team
  • Negotiate and secure the most commercially favourable fee agreements for new projects
  • Support relevant Director in managing the financial performance of the team
  • Maintain the required level of utilisation

 

Business Development

  • Develop a strong relationship with existing clients and encourage repeat business
  • Good understanding of wider Group services and full range of WIE capabilities
  • Develop strong internal relationships to promote and maximise project opportunities
  • Broaden the range of services provided to new and existing clients, including generating leads
  • Support relevant Directors in developing client relationships and new business sectors
  • Ability to build strong, constructive relationships with counterparts and other senior staff in other technical disciplines both within WIE and wider Group

 

Project Management

  • Plan and personally manage major projects in the office
  • Ensure time sheets are submitted promptly
  • Support relevant Directors in the effective management of projects
  • Closely monitor projects using Agresso data to identify and control potential cost overruns
  • Undertake WiP reviews for those projects for which you are Project Manager
  • Invoice promptly
  • Monitor debtors and assist credit control to recover payments when required
  • Prepare and submit claims for additional fees when required
  • Ensure adequate briefing of project teams and adherence to the IMS
  • Manage the deployment of resources in the office and assist with the management of resources within the wider office

 

Technical

  • Ensure that technical performance standards are met on all projects
  • Ensure that you maintain an awareness of and contribute to the technical development of your specific discipline
  • Lead technical work in your areas of expertise
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports
  • Ability to listen to and take on board constructive guidance
  • Manage the training and career development of staff, including the development and provision of internal courses/seminars
  • Provide expert technical support to projects run from other offices

 

Team Working & Communication

  • Build strong and constructive relationships with counterparts and Directors within Waterman WIE and across the wider Waterman Group
  • Promote team morale and encourage cooperation, collaboration and team working
  • Act as a mentor to staff and provides constructive feedback on performance
  • Identify training needs and provides support and encourages continued professional development
  • Carry out annual performance appraisals
  • Ensure full compliance with the Company’s Health and Safety Management system
  • In conjunction with Directors, appoint and retain high quality staff

 

Health & Safety

  • Have a sound understanding of the CDM Regulations, specifically the Designers requirements
  • Provide a safe working environment for all staff at all times
  • Promote all aspects of health and safety
  • Review and action where necessary findings provided by Principals under your direction during their review of accidents/incidents/near misses
  • Provide management with health and safety information as and when required
  • Completion of all risk assessment documentation in a timely manner
  • Report all accidents/incidents or near misses
  • Adhere to all H&S requirements at all times
  • Use and maintain appropriate PPE
  • Assist in delivering improved procedures and business performance
