First Choice Caribbean Hut Lunches has been crowned the winners of the Food and Hospitality award at the 2020 Best of Royal Greenwich Business Awards. Hosted by Journalist and TV Presenter Steph McGovern, it was their first award win and was chosen via public vote.

Offering the very best in home-cooked Jamaican food, this business has it all! Jerk chicken or pork, curried goat, Callaloo and Saltfish are just some of the mouth watering dishes on offer, combining the very best in spices and seasoning to create their renowned signature dishes.

Owner, Caron Schersmith-Meikle’s journey started from a young age when she would watch her Dad and Granny rustle up their authentic dishes from Jamaica. Caron is a Black British born entrepreneur with Jamaican parentage and has taken her passion for cooking for her friends and family by fusing the best of Jamaican spices with a bit of a twist to make it her own.

In 2014 she established First Choice Caribbean Hut Lunches where she cooks from her kitchen providing delicious lunches for her hungry customers across the Greenwich Borough. All of her carefully selected menu is guaranteed to be cooked fresh on the day of delivery and she also caters for corporate events.

Caron says: “Peabody’s Thamesmead team has played a big factor in the last year to help me increase the business profile by attending networking events, the monthly Thamesmead Business Forum, mentoring and also catering for a Peabody away day in Thamesmead with approx. 600 people in attendance. David and Christofi have been a great support system. They understand where the business is and the vision to help the business grow and be sustainable.

“With their encouragement and support they have put me in the position to enter the Best of Royal Greenwich Business Awards 2020. The finalists we were up against were well established businesses. It shows that no matter what size your business is, you can achieve your goals. We look forward to what the future will hold for us.”

Christofi Christou, Economic Inclusion Manager added: “Peabody Community Foundation in Thamesmead supports local businesses. We have a comprehensive enterprise programme that provides sight of and access to business opportunities including our monthly Thamesmead Business Forum’s to learn about the work Peabody is doing and provide support to access procurement opportunities locally. We are delighted that one of our local entrepreneurs has been recognised and hope this supports their growth plans.”

The Made in Thamesmead enterprise programme was established in October 2017 to celebrate entrepreneurship and showcase the talent that resides within Thamesmead. The programme is used as a platform for the local business community within Thamesmead and the surrounding areas to receive commissioned enterprise training, promote their businesses, share ideas, good practice and to provide a business support network.

Our Economic Inclusion Team is still able to offer support and opportunities even in these challenging times. We know there is a great deal of uncertainty for business owners, enterprises and employees and we’re here to help. We have an extensive network of partners that we work with so we can provide useful advice and guidance. This ranges from business support, online seminars, workshops, funding, and access to their online resources and networks.
