Residents are now settling into Redstart House, the first of the new buildings alongside Southmere Lake to be completed. The block includes 48 homes for social rent, with a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and maisonettes available.
One of the new residents, Levi Rothwell, has moved into a two-bedroom apartment with his partner and their nine-month-old baby.
“It’s been really good,” said Levi. “The area is nice, our flat is really nice and it’s somewhere you feel like you can raise a baby.”
The new homes are next to the community building and library, gym, bar, cafe and art gallery, dentist, hair salon and other commercial units in Cygnet Square. The popular Lakeside Centre, with its cafe and artists’ studios, is just around the lake shore, while Abbey Wood Station – with access to the Elizabeth Line and Thameslink – is a 10-minute walk away.
“These new homes offer so much to residents: outstanding views, great facilities and wonderful shared spaces right on the doorstep,” said David Llewellyn, Director of Development at Peabody.
“South Thamesmead is a prime example of a sustainable neighbourhood – somewhere that will benefit people now and for years to come. We hope everyone settles in well and thoroughly enjoys their time here.”
Redstart House is part of phase two of Peabody’s seven-phase regeneration masterplan for South Thamesmead. Of the 329 homes being built by developer Lovell in this phase, 42 per cent will be affordable. All the homes are due to be ready by the end of 2026, with blocks of flats and rows of townhouses opening gradually throughout the year.
A total of 2,800 homes will be built over all seven phases of the regeneration. It is a key part of Peabody’s long-term plan to improve, grow and look after Thamesmead.
