Water Safety Advice Thamesmead

Stay water safe this summer

Residents are being urged to avoid the temptation to cool off by entering Thamesmead’s waterways this summer.

Although they might look inviting during good weather, the town’s lakes and canals can still be dangerous.

Jack Gower, Peabody’s Landscape Activation Manager in Thamesmead, said: “When the sun is shining on the town, it might seem tempting to go for a dip – but please don't swim in open water.

“Even in a heatwave, the water is still very cold and can cause cold water shock. There might also be hidden hazards under the surface that you can't see.

“Anyone who falls in or becomes tired after entering the water should stay calm, float on their back and call for help. If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 immediately.”

With most serious incidents involving water happening when there is no professional supervision, Jack is directing local people who want to enjoy the water towards the watersports programme run by The Sharks.

The paddlesports club offers refreshing paddles on Southmere Lake up to five days a week through the summer. For full details, email thamesmead@thesharks.org.uk.

Learn water safety skills

Not all water incidents start with someone going for a swim. Many of those who get into trouble have no intention of entering the water, according to the Black Swimming Association.

The non-profit organisation, which works to raise awareness of water safety, says that the dangers of open water disproportionately impact African, Caribbean and Asian communities.

If you become tired after entering open water:

  1. Stay calm

  2. Float on your back

  3. Call for help
