Moorings community garden set for fresh start

A much-loved community garden in The Moorings is coming back to life this month, with new activities, homegrown food and more chances for neighbours to get involved.

Titmuss Avenue Community Garden is now being run by Brighter Futures College, the team behind Camouflage Cafe at the Moorings Sociable Club, and they have big plans for the space.

Recent improvements by Peabody mean the garden is now more accessible. With new raised beds, a water connection on the site and an asphalt path, it’s easier for people try their hands at gardening.

Students from Brighter Futures College, who have special educational needs and disabilities, will work in the revamped garden as part of their vocational courses.

“As with Camouflage Cafe and everything we do, it’s all about our students,” said Kemi Madumere, Co-Founder of Brighter Futures Group. “Gardening and looking after plants are tasks that many of them really enjoy, so we want them to get their hands dirty, learn new skills and build experience at Titmuss Avenue Community Garden.”

The garden will be used to grow food that is culturally relevant to the local community. The produce will be used as ingredients for Camouflage Cafe and will also be distributed to residents.

“We will invite local people to collect produce to use at home,” added Kemi. “We also have plans to use what we grow to cook a community meal that they will be able to enjoy.”

Other plans for the rejuvenated outdoor space include a forest school nursery, an open-air cinema and a programme of evening events for the community.

Jack Gower, Peabody’s Landscape Activation Manager, said the vision for an inclusive community space had been key to Brighter Futures College being awarded the licence to run the garden.

“Our recent investment in Titmuss Avenue Community Garden means it’s a lovely place for Brighter Future College students and other residents to spend time,” said Jack. “We’re excited to see people outdoors doing gardening and other activities in the space.”
