Sixties estates land prestigious nature award

Two 1960s estates in South Thamesmead have gained national recognition for their bright, beautiful and biodiverse spaces at the Big Biodiversity Awards 2024.

The Southmere and Parkview estates are now home to more animals, plants and microorganisms, with biodiversity increasing by 20% across both neighbourhoods. This follows the completion of an extensive £3.7m landscaping programme by Peabody in 2020.

A variety of new trees, shrubs and plants, rain gardens and other natural features were introduced. Over the years, these attractive and welcoming outdoor spaces have flourished, meaning residents can now enjoy a greater variety of nature closer to their doorsteps. The awards judges praised the lasting impact of the landscaping programme on the local community.

They commented: “From such a starting point, this has been transformed into an area that delivers significant amenity value, as well as the promotion of well-being.

“There is also a long-term management plan that takes into consideration local residents, and therefore serves as a great example of how to deliver a regeneration project.”
