Thamesmead Shed will offer a welcoming environment for local people to learn and share skills while working together to make, repair and repurpose items.
“The goal of Thamesmead Shed is to help men and women combat isolation and loneliness, boost mental health, and foster a sense of purpose and camaraderie,” said organiser John Hogan. “Sometimes it’s hard to talk face-to-face, but when you’re shoulder-to-shoulder working on a task, like woodworking for example, it can be easier to open up.”
John and his fellow organisers hope the shed will become a community of like-minded people.
Although practical projects will be the focus of the group’s get-togethers, there is no need for members to have any existing DIY skills.
“You can just join us for a cuppa with no expectation to take part in activities,” added John.
