A group of 31 students, who had been unable to secure traditional work experience placements, joined a skills programme organised by Peabody and YouthBuild Ventures UK.
“When we found out the students didn’t have work experience placements, we worked closely with the school to make sure they didn’t miss out on this important opportunity,” said Nadia Kassab-Taplin, Peabody’s Young People’s Project Officer in Thamesmead. “Through our partnership with YouthBuild, we created a project to help the young people build confidence and develop practical skills.”
The Year 10 pupils were given roles and responsibilities during the three-day project. They designed, measured and built four benches for the school.
After seeing their handiwork, one student said: “I didn’t think I’d be good at carpentry, but once we got into it, I picked it up. It showed me I can learn things outside the classroom if I’m given the chance.”
All four benches are now at St Paul’s Academy. The students involved were encouraged to etch their initials on the underside of the benches in recognition of their work.
Gordon Davis, the school’s Careers Lead, was impressed with how the students had grown as a result of the placement.
He told the students: “Every one of you has stepped out of your comfort zone. I think you’ve built each other up over these three days.”
The school is keen to expand the programme so that more students can take part in similar projects in the future.
There are also many other opportunities available for young people in Thamesmead to improve their confidence, resilience and skills.
