Local lad Max builds promising career

Some people spend an entire career trying to make their mark. Max Kirby has already helped to shape the skyline of his city for generations — and he is only 18 years old.

Bexleyheath native Max makes the short journey to Thamesmead each morning. He is an apprentice site manager on the construction of the second phase of new homes in South Thamesmead.

Max’s employer, Lovell, is building 329 new homes near Southmere Lake in partnership
with Peabody.

He said: “It feels amazing to be building new homes for people who live so near to you.”

It was initially only due to a painful accident that Max ended up playing his part in transforming this corner of south-east London.

He explained: “I was previously doing an electrical installation course at college. A large metal coil fell on my finger. I was unable to do the work so I couldn’t complete the course.

“I had done work experience with Lovell at a site in Woolwich a year earlier, so I got back in touch. I did a couple of interviews, got the apprenticeship and have been working as an apprentice site manager since then.

“Thankfully, the finger has completely healed in the meantime.”

A complete novice at the start of his apprenticeship, Max had to get to grips with the construction industry very quickly.

“There are a lot of different aspects to construction,” said Max. “There are trades that I didn’t even know existed when I started. Then suddenly I was coordinating and handling logistics for all trades and deliveries.”

He added: “I’m now working on internal and external site management. I’ve still got a lot to learn but I get more knowledge and experience every day.”

Max is part way through his two-year apprenticeship working alongside the senior site manager in South Thamesmead. He is planning to start a degree apprenticeship, which will give him a formal qualification in addition to his growing on-site experience.
