The play area in Gallions Park will be officially reopened at an event on Thursday 16 July between 3.30pm and 5pm.
The ball court has been resurfaced, with new basketball hoops and football goals installed. Higher fencing – requested by young people to help keep balls in the court – has been added in key locations, with lower fencing to make the court more inviting in other places. New seating has also been added around the court.
Peabody refurbished the ball court and surrounding areas in partnership with Baylis Landscapes and landscape architects Turkington Martin.
Residents can put the new equipment to the test under the watchful eye of a professional coach during the launch event. There will be refreshments available for all visitors, including those who have worked up a sweat on the ball court. Parents and other spectators can make themselves comfy on the new seating around the court.
Young people will also be encouraged to make their mark on the ball court. The event includes an art workshop, where visitors can get creative and help to design a colourful mural to decorate the asphalt court.
"We'd like to say thank you to local people for their patience while the ball court was being upgraded," said Sue Forsyth, Peabody’s Project Manager for Landscape in Thamesmead. "We would love for residents to join us to celebrate the new ball court, work on their ball skills and enjoy some refreshments."
