The initiative gives local people aged 14 and over a chance to borrow a bicycle for a month to try more sustainable travel choices at absolutely no cost.
The free bike hire service launches at Sporting Club Thamesmead on Tuesday 3 March. Bike collections will be available on the first Tuesday of every month between 5pm and 6.30pm.
“We want all residents to have an opportunity to experience the benefits of pedal power for free,” said Khadeja Chowdhury, Peabody's Health and Wellbeing Projects Officer in Thamesmead. “Cycling boosts wellbeing, eases traffic congestion and helps to create a healthier future for everyone.”
“Whether they’re commuting or riding for pleasure, we want everyone to sign up to borrow a bike and give cycling a go. Not owning a bike isn’t an excuse anymore,” joked Khadeja.
To register their interest in borrowing a bike for a month, residents need to fill out a short consent form.
The free bike hire service is part of Peabody’s work to help residents create a greener, healthier Thamesmead.
Thamesmead Ride Together returns

There are even more opportunities for residents to get out and about on two wheels, with Thamesmead Ride Together relaunching on Saturday 7 March following its winter break.
Family sessions for riders aged over five and an adult club for over 16s are both available. They give people of all ages a chance to practice cycling skills, get active and enjoy being on a bike in a safe, friendly and supportive environment.
All sessions are free. Bikes and helmets can also be provided for free to those who need them.
Thamesmead Ride Together starts at Sporting Club Thamesmead every Saturday. Adult Cycle Club is 10am to 12pm, followed by the Family Cycle Club at 12pm to 2pm.
