London’s largest free sculpture park putting former golf course to new use

Thamesmead will be home to London’s largest free sculpture park as part of the former golf course is transformed into a huge open-air exhibition space.

Winter Sculpture Park 2025 will take place on the grounds of the old Thamesview Golf Centre, near Fairway Drive.

It opens on Saturday 1 March and runs for eight weeks. In that time, the golf course will be home to more than 30 artworks by contemporary artists from Thamesmead, South East London and further afield.

Thamesmead artists Mariusz Wolny, Liam Scully and Marcus Orlandi are among those whose sculptures will be on show, along with Joseph Ijoyemi, who grew up locally. Joseph is well known for his striking artwork on the floor of The Cage multi-use games area in South Thamesmead.

Driving the project are Meg Stuart and Kieran Idle, of curators No.32, who are excited about bringing Winter Sculpture Park to Thamesmead.

Kieran said: “What we love about Thamesview as a venue is that there’s so much nature. We’re excited about placing the sculptures in a considered, low-impact way so that people can enjoy the art and nature at the same time.

"We also like that passers-by will be able to see the sculptures from the Thames Path. So in addition to people visiting Winter Sculpture Park, we’ll also have people who chance upon the artworks as they walk along the pathway.”

Meg said: “It’s public art and it’s free to visit throughout. We want people to wander, explore and discover these new cultural monuments along the Thames.”

Winter Sculpture Park 2025 starts with a launch party outdoors at Thamesview Golf Centre on Saturday 1 March. The launch party will also include music, performances, interactive art  and free creative workshops. It is a free, ticketed event.
