An update from our gardener-in-residence - January 2022

Our gardener-in-residence Georgiana is back with some new-year gardening tips!

Happy New Year Thamesmead gardeners!

Winter might seem like a dull time but for gardens and gardeners it can be as exciting as the rest of year. It’s time for a well-deserved rest after a busy time of pottering around and it also gives us the opportunity to keep busy with specific winter gardening jobs.

We spend all year nurturing seeds, seedlings and mature plants  now’s the time to show them some TLC! No matter what plants you’re growing or plan to grow  whether indoors or outdoors  I invite you to take some time to learn about them, explore their needs and find out what you can do to offer them a more nurtured environment for the year ahead.

The internet is a great source of knowledge (from specific gardening websites like Gardeners World or RHS to YouTube channels and Pinterest inspiration) but if you learn best by experience or by talking to others, you can drop-in to our activities and events and have a chat with me or other experienced gardeners.

Other jobs that you can do at this time of year are: cleaning pots (to avoid disease being transmitted to new plants), clearing up outdoor growing space, mulching, building raised beds, preparing indoor propagation areas, planning what you would like to grow this year and of course, joining us at our events and activities.
