Thamesmead is set to come alive for a weekend of events and activities as we celebrate the past, present and future of Thamesmead during the Thamesmead Festival taking place between 15 and 17 September 2017.

There will be something for everyone as we celebrate the best of Thamesmead’s creative talent and all things created in Thamesmead.

The festival will launch on Friday 15 September with an event at The Link Thamesmead which will showcase Thamesmead’s home-grown talent including members of Theatre Street Performing Arts, Vine Choir and Thamesmead Youth Voice and a performance from Greenwich+Docklands International Festival.

Saturday 16 September will centre around the Thamesmead Town Fete with a mix of old school entertainment and surprising art experiences, including local bands and music talent, community stalls, an open-air lounge, local pet show and a night time light spectacular*, Wish You Were Here, at Southmere Lake.

While Sunday 17 September will see a variety of art, performances and storytelling around different venues and outdoor locations across Thamesmead’s diverse landscape and neighbourhoods as part of Open House London, ending with a cinema screening at The Link Thamesmead.

The weekend aims to highlight the valuable work being done locally by organisations such as Theatre Street Performing Arts and The Archway Project, who will be celebrating their 35th anniversary during the Thamesmead Festival weekend. As a youth charity which teaches young people aged 11 to 19 motorbike mechanics, engineering and off-road dirt biking skills, The Archway Project will be outside The Link Thamesmead on Saturday 16 September, offering mechanic sessions, go-karting and more.

Peabody has commissioned the UK’s leading outdoor arts companies, Emergency Exit Arts (EEA) who are based in Greenwich, to lead on the festival production, which will involve Thamesmead residents and individual artists and organisations from the local area, across London and the South East.

*Look out for EEA over the summer when they will be working with residents to create 'wish lanterns' that will be floated on Southmere Lake during the light spectacle on Saturday 16 February. Meanwhile, please get in touch if you would like to get involved and make a lantern.

Buildings across Thamesmead will be opening their doors during Open House London which is taking place over the same weekend (16 & 17 September) as the Thamesmead Festival, some of which need pre-booking.

Put the dates in your diary. More information coming soon.

The Thamesmead Festival is a partnership event between Peabody and Thamesmead residents, part funded by Arts Council England, supported by London Borough of Bexley and Royal Borough of Greenwich and delivered by Emergency Exit Arts.
